We propose a 3 days journey in a private Jeep to discover the wild peninsula of Snaefellsnes. Located North-West of Reykjavik, it represents a condensed version of the Iceland’s beauty: volcanoes, glaciers, fjords, mountains, lava caves, cliffs and the ocean. Everything is combined to make this place one of the most beautiful areas in Iceland....Not to omit that during the clear winter nights, you have a good possibility to see the Northern Lights.
Day 1: The Wild West and the Glaciers
This adventurous day begins with the discovery of the Þingvellir National Park. It is not only a beautiful natural site located at the divergent boundary of the North American and European tectonic plates, but it is also known to be the birthplace of one of the oldest
parliaments known until now. After visiting Þingvellir, on the high plateaus, we cross a wide variety of landscapes on the road to Kaldidalur, before reaching the Langjokull, ranked as the second largest glacier of Iceland.
After a short wander on the white glacial plains, we visit one of the most magnificent lava caves, the Surtshellir. It impresses with its dimensions but even more by its magmatic walls and vitrified basalts that overlay the main corridor.
We continue towards the Borgarfjordur fjord to see the Hraunfossar waterfall. The run-off waters from the enormous lava field of Grahraun flow into the Hvítá river, at a width of 900 m. Not far away, there is another large waterfall, named Barnafoss.
We pass to Reykholt, a village which was in the Middle Ages one of the intellectual centers of the country, before reaching the country's most powerful geothermal network, the Deildartunguhver. The water springing out at 100 ° C makes it possible to develop greenhouse agriculture and provides the urban heating of the surrounding municipalities.
Before reaching our hotel in the Snaefellsnes peninsula, we can make a stop in Borgarnes, the place of the "Settlement Center" museum. It is interestingly retracing the history of Iceland's colonization. We then set up for 2 nights at the Budir 4 * hotel.
During winter evenings, when the sky is clear, we have the possibility to observe the Northern Lights from the hotel. If necessary, we can go to the peninsula’s Northern coast in order to observe the phenomenon.
Majestically dominating the ocean and being located at the Western extremity of the Snaefellsnes peninsula, the Snaefellsjokull glacier is considered by many to be the most beautiful Icelandic glacier. Moreover, Jules Verne had greatly contributed to its reputation by locating here
the begining of his famous novel "Journey to the center of the Earth", in 1864. We benefit from its beauty by traversing the glacier, making numerous stops and a few short walks on its foothills. Along the coast, between the small port of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, we walk on the lava cliffs that overlook the ocean.
All throughout the day we discover geological amazing phenomena and remarkable sites such as the cliff of Gatklettur, the black pebble beach of Djupalonssandur, the Saxhóll crater and many others ...
We return to Hotel Budir 4 *, in the evening, to spend our second night.
Two possibilities are available to you for this last day, depending on your return requirements. Option A : From the North of the Snaefellsnes peninsula to Reykjavik. Option B : The Blue Lagoon and the Keflavik Airport
Option A : From the North of the Snaefellsnes peninsula to Reykjavik. If your final destination is Reykjavik, we continue our exploration of the Northern frontage of the Snaefellsnes peninsula by visiting the Grundarfjordur and Stykkisholmur fishing villages. In Bjarnarhofn , we visit a local curiosity, “The shark museum”... We leave the coast to reach Borgarnes, along the beautiful Selvallavatn lake, where we have the possibility to visit the "Settlement Center" museum if we did not visit it previously. Then we head towards Reyklavik to reach your hotel.
Option B: The Blue Lagoon and the Keflavik Airport If your return flight is in the late afternoon at the Keflavik Airport, we take the Southern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and we stop at the Ölkelda farm to taste a naturally gaseous mineral water that springs out from the ground. After visiting Borgarnes and crossing the Hvalfjordur Fjord, we take a direct route to the relaxing waters of the Blue Lagoon. Indeed, what a better way to conclude your journey in Iceland than enjoying a relaxing bath in this source of hot water in the heart of the Reykjanes peninsula? We then drop you off at the KEF airport. By being early-risers and shortening a bit your stay at the Blue Lagoon, we can explore the moonlike and picturesque landscapes of the Kleifarvatn lake and visit the Seltun and Krysuvik geothermal areas on the Reykjanes peninsula.
As you can see, we have a very flexible attitude and are happy to adapt the itinerary according to your constraints in order to make you fully enjoy your journey in our company.
