Caves in Iceland

Iceland is situated on top of a ‘hot spot’ on Earth, where there are dozens of volcanoes, craters and hot springs creating caves of all sizes and shapes.
You’ll find three types : lava caves, ice cave and glacier caves. The former are the byproduct of volcanic eruptions, which can create tubes and chambers below ground. ice caves are bedrock caves that contain ice all year round.Glacier caves, on the other hand, are large passageways carved through the ice by flows of liquid water.

Some lava caves, in remote locations, are open only from May until mid October while others are open all year long. The ice cave season in Iceland is rather short (from November to March)
